A SPECIAL MENTION
Hesselink also built a solid reputation behind the decks:
Interesting TEDx on Art VS Science: “Science is boring, Art is stupid” … or maybe not…
In the end, we need both the artists and the scientists in this world: no artist = no entertainment, no scientist = no… everything… With Hesselink, we have a combination of both, for our greatest pleasure.
TAMMO HESSELINK [NOUS’KLAER AUDIO]
Hesselink is what you call “a mad scientist”. The myth surrounding the idea of being “more left-brained”, analytical, logical, VS “more right-brained”, creative, free-thinker, is having a hard time in front of the Dutch producer, who obviously developed both sides simultaneously. Data scientist with a master’s degree, great mathematician and chess player, perceived as a talented artist by his peers, he evolves several steps ahead of his opponents, through his various projects.
His creative process is made of a trained sense of structure, ideal for building complex rhythmic grids, and of a certain cognitive flexibility, allowing him to juggle between openness and sensitivity, playfulness and seriousness, intuition and reason, solitude and collaboration.
Like his other mates from Delsin Records and Nous’klaer Audio – Konduku, Martinou and Forest West Drive in particular – Hesselink performs “intelligent music” to say the least and sets the percussions at the centre of his music.
It’s on Oberman’s project that he released the present album, whose musical confidence is contagious, as an invitation to let go and join the dancefloor with excitement. His broken beats impress, from the impactful drums and basslines, and eventually “reach out to the divine”, when the trippy layer is beautiful and perfectly dosed. It’s the case in “Eraser” and “Etseled”, luscious and minimal, valuing an album globally well-thought-out and conducive to unforeseen mental evasion.
FROM THE VAULT
RESURRECTING A DOPE RELEASE FROM THE PAST
NOTE: First, out of gratitude, we surprise the artists who have accepted to be our guest writers from the 44th to the 63rd selection, by sharing what we humbly consider to be their top work.
If you are looking for a more recent work from him, “Unda” just came out a couple of days ago:
His 2014 UnderStudio mix, just for the nostalgia:
CLAUDIO PRC [TGP]
It is not too risky to affirm that Claudio PRC is considered today as one of the most respected artists in our scene, by the deep techno lovers as much as by his peers. Humble, he would probably dislike such an honorific title. Yet he deserves it for being a stalwart of the movement, with top productions on legendary labels such as Elettronica Romana, Prologue, Semantica, Delsin and TGP which he co-founded, for his project 012, showcasing the young artists of tomorrow, for his epic gigs in more than 44 countries and for his top-class podcasts. In 2020, we had the chance to dissect his creative process in an interview for Orb Mag, highly recommended.
On our side, we first discovered him in his UnderStudio mix, memorable for his delicacy and obvious passion behind the decks. It’s however his 2018 album “012” that reaches our shores like a tsunami. It has been for us an inspiring “monument of peace”, and yes, “peace” can also be powerful, as approved by Mahatma Gandhi: “In a gentle way, you can shake the world”.
Less known: Claudio PRC also used to review music for the defunct web magazine “Behind the Store” some years ago, which he also brilliantly did in our 45th selection, making us feel very honoured 🙂
