GOLDEN RELEASE
A SPECIAL MENTION

PRG/M already released an album on Semantica last year, with his crew r²π AKA “the mad scientists” (Retina.it, Ruhig & PRG/M). Don’t tell us you missed this album, no, don’t…

PRG/M [SEMANTICA]

Abusive stereophonic game, indigestible syncopated notes, repulsive harsh percussions, PRG/M appears to be doing everything to reject us from his album. Even when it finally gets intensively trippy in “Nāga”, the heartless creator abruptly ends it after just 4 minutes. Does he enjoy torturing his listeners? 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

Not exactly: if his experimental approach eventually aspires to be uneasy to access, he’s like often driven by deep intentions. Partly created during the pandemic crisis, “L’altro Giardino” (The Other Garden) illustrates the environment when tough and challenging for mankind. Like sometimes nature does, PRG/M wants to hurt us artistically, through 13 tracks whose number somewhat hammers the bad luck.

On the other side, do we enjoy being hurt? Another label, Hospital Productions, by Fernow, is described as “a small sadomasochistic family”: we haven’t reached this stage yet on Semantica, but like in a toxic love relationship, the more we feel rejected, the more we are attracted. Moreover, the less hope there is, the more we look for hints of it: in “L’altro Giardino”, hope can be found in the beauty of the drones, while everything else takes us out of our comfort zone; what art is all about…

RESURRECTING A DOPE RELEASE FROM THE PAST

NOTE: First, out of gratitude, we surprise the artists who have accepted to be our guest writers from the 44th to the 63rd selection, by sharing what we humbly consider to be their top work.

An “almost forgotten” ambient mix for Electric Deluxe…

If you are looking for more recent work, Gigli just released an EP with the Italian ambient & experimental duo Bichord, with who he already collaborated a few times 👉

GIORGIO GIGLI
[ELECTRIC DELUXE]

Next to an honourable path on the mythic yet defunct labels Elettronica Romana, Prologue and his own imprint Zooloft (detailed in the 55th selection), Gigli joined Speedy J’s forces in his project Electric Deluxe. From 2011 to 2013, the Italian stalwart released two minimal EPs for the Dutch label, and, less known, a sublime futuristic ambient mix. Then in 2015 came what we consider to be his most personal work: the present album, his first one.

Conceptualised around a post-apocalyptic world, marked by the extinction of all animals on Earth, including us (thank you), “On The Right Place Where Not To Be” embodies the darkness that the topic suggests. Watch out during the listening, as you may smell the decaying corpses through the hellish atmospheres…

The above-mentioned visionary mix suddenly echoes like a prequel to such an obscure journey. The parallel is not totally irrelevant, since it took almost three years for Gigli to produce the album, meaning he was already thinking of it during the recording of the mix…

At least, the two works unveiled his passion for science fiction, and should serve as interesting demos for any sci-fi movie director in search of a talented composer (Andrej Tarkovskij, if you read this…) (Ah no, he’s dead).
