AXEL TOBEN [QEONE]
Like a good wine, the more we go through “Tombo”, the more we appreciate it. The eclecticism is eventually disturbing at first. Yet we realise – more during the replays – that there is a certain form of consistency still, which, in some creative way, doesn’t lie in the musical genres, but in the colour of the pieces.
At work is Spanish multi-instrumentalist Axel Toben from Spain, who is mainly into two musical realms. On one side, he composes contemporary piano pieces, with some having been selected in Nils Frahm’s “Piano Day” playlists, such as the beautiful “Orbit” in 2020. On the other side, he produces orchestral electronic music, from electronica to broken beats, where the piano is eventually used, as any other instrument. His tracks all have in common enchanting ambiences, very suitable to escape from reality: “Tombo” is a sublime addon to Polygonia’s up-and-coming label.
FROM THE VAULT
RESURRECTING A DOPE RELEASE FROM THE PAST
NOTE: First, out of gratitude, we surprise the artists who have accepted to be our guest writers from the 44th to the 63rd selection, by sharing what we humbly consider to be their top work.
Kontinum also produced this beautiful track on TGP:
Laima Adelaide favourited this one in her chart:
KONTINUM
[THE GODS PLANET]
Ness, Deepbass, Blazej Malinowski, Reggy Van Oers, they all “got it”; they all know how to create well-designed tracks. It’s the result of some magical potion called “time, talent and effort”, allowing TGP‘s names to be systematically synonymous with quality music. Kontinum from Leipzig, younger, is a rookie to this fellowship, but when reading his name on a release, you also know “that you are dealing with the best”. Yo.
Passionate, he dropped a detailed comment in our 53rd selection, and we picked “Urban Voices” as our favourite release from him: a beautiful well-accomplished album, particularly trippy with smooth frequencies and interesting storytelling. We highly recommend you also check out his label Mnestic if you still haven’t, as well as his self-released page.
