Floating Machine is what you’d call a “musician’s musician.” He’s the guy who knows what to do with a guitar, a piano, and a saxophone, having performed in various “sharp” musical genres from jazz to experimental music. More than a decade ago, he started to produce electronic music in the melodic techno realm, with beautiful melodies and, straight from the beginning, an obvious taste for the deep territories.
From the mid-2010s, his music was getting a wide amplitude, giving his work a more panoramic immersion. He started designing electronica releases in the vein (and level) of what Ultimae’s roster is doing: crystal clear, deep sounds carried by clever beatwork, thinking, for instance, of “Wake Seed” on Authors Edition or “Refractions on the Lake” on Mindspring Music. Without any surprise, he produced a remix for the Ultimae crew in 2018.
A few years down the line, Floating Machine found himself hypnotised by, well, hypnotic techno. “Orvalho” on Circular Limited wore the structural DNA of his personal heroes: Luigi Tozzi, Ness, and Formant Value. Yet, he refused to be boxed in, pivoting in 2021 to deliver “Armadilha“, an impactful, cinematic album that dialled up the tension and embraced much darker, sharper rhythms. This shape-shifting approach translates beautifully into his live sets, thinking of his memorable sonic ritual for Aenan in 2022.
It’s atop this long experience that he came up with the present mix. Dropping just in time to spearhead the summer, it hits with an instant, physical groove and a masterclass in tension management. It’s a beautifully paced piece of nocturnal storytelling, transporting the listener straight into the heart of a rhythmic, moonlit tribal gathering deep within the trees. Anodynic Frequencies is itself a well-respected podcast and a young record label focused on deep, hypnotic techno, downtempo, and ambient soundscapes.
The mix is a statement piece, bridging the gap between late-night club hypnosis and early-morning horizontal listening, and proving that summer music doesn’t have to be bright to be absolutely brilliant…
