JON HOPKINS & FRIENDS
[DOMINO RECORDING]
While digging – with love – into an infinite number of releases, we often end up asking “But where is the music?” Indeed, most producers seem more concerned about just combining sounds and effects like a Lego game, without really taking the time to bring a meaningful drone or melodic structure. Yet such a layer is essential for us to make the track “memorable” and to induce an “artistic beauty”, whether light or dark, even subjective.
Happily, “musical musicians” are still active in the electronic music scene, Jon Hopkins being a trustworthy one. Like Nils Frahm he sometimes performs with, Hopkins has a natural beautiful sensitivity to paint his dreams with electronica and ambient colours. After “Music For Psychedelic Therapy“, the English artist further pursues his meditative path with his seventh solo album: “Ritual” is more immersive than ever, from its warm shimmering sonic layers and the fact that the tracks are uninterrupted. The entry of intense beats feels like the purification we all need during these times of sin…

DJ PYTHON [INCIENSO]
The freshness of labels such as Livity Sound or Well Street Records mainly comes from the fusion of hypnotic and dub techno, giving a modern flavour to each respective aesthetic. “Mas Amable” is also anchored in this fusion, from a slightly different angle: DJ Python described his music as “deep reggaeton”, a wink to his Latino roots, but not only. If dub techno evolved from reggae, his designation suggests that he also incorporates a subtle hip-hop influence, from the Miami bass subgenre.
DJ Python precisely spent a part of his life in Florida before moving to New York, a common point with the founder of Incienso, a label that we highly suggest to dig into if you enjoy the album’s sound.Â
“Mas Amable” encountered massive success upon its release, although when hitting play, you may be sceptical at first, due to the repetition of the same beat from one track to another. This is however for us how the hypnotic effect is achieved, as part of the three fundamental conditions to maximise it: the repetition, the minimalism and “the considerable length”: if you take the album as “one long track”, like a live act, then chances are that like us, you will let your darkest thoughts fall into the vortex…
